LEFF - Leiden Essay Film Festival

until 16 September

The very first Leiden Essay Film Festival brings three days of films that explore personal stories and urgent social themes. Expect a bold, imaginative program full of reflection and inspiring encounters with filmmakers.

The Leiden Essay Film Festival opens on 14 September at Museum De Lakenhal and continues on 15 and 16 September at Het Kijkhuis.

From 14 to 16 September 2025, Leiden hosts the inaugural edition of le# – the Leiden Essay Film Festival, the first Dutch festival dedicated entirely to the essay film. Over forty thought-provoking films from around the world explore themes like power, migration, listening, science, and identity—blending fiction, non-fiction, and experimentation.

Alongside new works from Senegal, Vietnam, Palestine, and the Netherlands, you’ll find classics by Chris Marker, Chantal Akerman, and Johan van der Keuken. The program also features Q&As, discussions, and meet-the-maker events that invite audiences to engage deeply with the films and their ideas.

🎟️ Full program and ticket sales available from 22 August at leidenessayfilmfestival.com.
